Massage Therapy Careers

Career Opportunities

Many licensed massage therapists operate their own private practices. This enables them to serve clients directly from their home, office, or client's residence, or work onsite at a larger business as an independent contractor. Seasoned massage therapists can earn as much as $60 an hour in metropolitan areas.

Depending on their massage specialty (relaxation, stress reduction, pain management, injury recovery), massage therapy careers allow licensed practitioners contract with doctors' offices, fitness clubs, holistic health clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, spas, and sports medicine facilities. Some also become a massage therapist to act as independent contractors in corporate offices, providing stress relief for employees. According to the AMTA, 14% of Fortune 200 companies include massage in their employee benefit programs. Self-employed practitioners also practice in public spaces, such as airports and shopping malls. Finally, some licensed practitioners fill salaried position at massage clinics and various health facilities.

Educational Requirements

If your state regulates the practice of massage therapy and requires licensure, completing an accredited massage therapy-training program (with 500 in-class hours) is mandatory prior to begining massage therapy careers. Today, 25 states require licensure to become a massage therapist.

If you state does not require licensure, it is still advisable to earn your certification from a respected massage therapy school, and pass the national certification examination, administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). These credentials will assure potential clients that you possess the necessary skills and knowledge to practice massage therapy safely and competently.

Massage therapy programs should provide coursework in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and massage theory and practice. Different programs may emphasize specific styles of massage. Before enrolling in a school, make sure it teaches the styles you want to learn.
