Become a Medical Transcriptionist

Medical transcriptionists are medical language experts, which translate physician and surgeon comment (both oral and written) into a variety of legal medical reports, used by health workers, hospital administrators, insurers, and others to document the condition and care of patients.

Careers in Medical Transcription

In 1997, the medical transcription profession was granted its own job classification by the U.S. Department of Labor. As a result, medical transcriptionists enjoy improved standing and pay in the allied health profession, no longer erroneously classified as medical secretaries, medical dictating operators, and the like.

Qualified medical transcriptionists can pursue several career tracks. Some become a medical transcriptionist to operate flexible home medical transcription practices, while others work as independent contractors onsite at health facilities. Still others accept salaried positions in the interests of career development. With experience, medical transcriptionists can become quality assurance specialists, supervisors, managers, and department heads. Teaching at a medical transcription school is a career option for seasoned medical transcriptionists, as well.

Medical transcriptionists generally work in doctors' offices, health associations, hospitals, insurance companies, laboratories, legal offices, medical libraries, rehabilitation facilities, research centers, and veterinary offices. Some also specialize in order to work dieticians, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, therapists, specialized surgeons, and other personnel.

Educational Requirements

Medical transcription training and basic medical transcription certification can be pursued at community colleges and medical transcription schools, or through Internet learning programs.

Medical transcription courses should include medical science (anatomy, physiology, body systems, disease processes), medical and surgical procedures (with emphasis on instruments, supplies, appliances, and prosthetic devices), pharmacology, and research and laboratory fundamentals.

For greater credibility in the field, students can earn the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) credential from the American Association of Medical Transcription. This requires attending a medical transcription school accredited by the AAMT and passing a two-part exam administered by AAMT's Medical Transcription Certification Commission. Additionally, CMTs must pursue continuing education.
