FYI - Naturopathy and Naturopathic Medicine
Career opportunities for physicians of naturopathy have never been better. States across the country are passing naturopathic licensing laws, providing naturopathic medicine the legitimacy of law and enabling graduates of accredited four-year naturopathic colleges and universities to practice as licensed specialty and primary care physicians.
With the passage of SB 907, California became the 13th state to offer naturopathy licensing to qualified Doctors of Naturopathy, N.D., and Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine, N.M.D. Other states with naturopathic licensing laws include Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, and Washington. The U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands also license naturopathic doctors.
Naturopathy is a rapidly growing field of alternative medicine, practiced by more than 1,500 licensed or licensable naturopathic physicians in the United States. Offered as both an alternative and complementary form of Health Care, naturopathic medicine blends modern science and diagnosis with proven holistic, nontoxic therapeutics that stimulate the body's natural healing capabilities. Minor surgery is only advocated as a last-resort.
Review the main principles of naturopathic medicine, as described by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians:
Today, naturopathic students have more than ten accredited naturopathic colleges to choose from, accredited either by the Council of Naturopathic Medical Education (recognized by the U.S. Department of Education) or the American Naturopathic Medical Certification and Accreditation Board. Before selecting a naturopathic college or university, review your states licensing requirements.
Certifications and associate degrees in naturopathic medicine also can be obtained through two-year community and junior colleges, however they do not qualify people for licensing.
To qualify for licensing, candidates must complete a four-year doctorate degree in naturopathy or naturopathic medicine at an accredited college. Naturopathic students are trained in the same basic sciences as M.D. students, including anatomy, cell biology, physiology, histology, pathology, biochemistry, lab diagnosis, neurosciences, clinical physical diagnosis, genetics, epidemiology, public health, and more. Naturopathic students also must complete four years of training in the following holistic health disciplines:
While licensing varies from state to state, most licensed naturopathic physicians will also have to fulfill state-mandated continuing education requirements annually.
