Nursing Careers
According to U.S Department of Labor projections, nursing will be one of top ten fastest growing occupations from 2000 to 2010.
- The DOL's Bureau of Labor and Statistics also projects that by 2010 there will be 1 million total new and replacement Registered Nurse positions available.
- In a July 2002 report, the Health Resources and Services Administration concluded that 44 states will have registered nurse shortages over the next two decades.
In the coming years, registered nurses also can expect greater pay and opportunities for career advancement as the nursing shortage and dynamics of managed care enable them to assume larger roles in the Health Care profession.
The current nursing shortage should also allow nurses to parlay required continuing education units or "nursing CEUs" into positions with higher pay and greater responsibility.

What is a Registered Nurse?
A registered nurse (RN) is a Health Care practitioner that works in a wide variety of settings. A registered nurse career can include work in hospitals and physician offices to social service agencies and churches, promoting health, preventing disease, and helping patients cope with illness. Nurse practitioners involved in direct patient care "observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress; assist physicians during treatments and examinations; administer medications; and assist in convalescence and rehabilitation." according to the DOL's Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Nursing is the largest Health Care occupation, comprising more than 2 million jobs. Of this number, three out of five nurses work in hospitals. Nurses also are employed as "Office nurses" (physician offices), "Nursing home nurses" (retirement communities) "Home health nurses" (patient residences), "Public health nurses" (government and private agencies, clinics, and institutions), "Occupational health or industrial nurses" (worksites), and Head nurses or nurse supervisors.
How to begin a registered nurse career…
To become an RN, students must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass a national licensing exam. Nursing education includes classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience in hospitals or other Health Care facilities. Students take courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology and other behavioral sciences, and nursing.
- Nurses may be licensed in more than one State, either by examination, by endorsement of a license issued by another State, or through a multi-State licensing agreement. All States require periodic license renewal, which may involve continuing education units. Additionally, some require annual completion of nursing CEUs.
- Nursing diplomas can be obtained from two-year community/junior colleges or online distance learning programs (Associate Degree in Nursing, A.D.N), four-year colleges or universities (Bachelor of Science, Nursing, B.S.N), and graduate schools (Master of Science, Nursing, M.S.N).
Generally, licensed graduates from all three qualify for staff nursing positions.
