Once you land that coveted first nursing job, your education isn't over. Continuing education (through nursing CEUs) is, in fact, a significant and permanent part of every nurse's career.
According to the American Nurses Association's Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development, continuing education consists of:
"Systematic professional learning experiences designed to augment the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of nurses and therefore enrich the nurses' contributions to quality Health Care and their pursuit of professional career goals."
These "learning experiences" are measured in Continuing Education Units, or nursing CEUs. Nurses receive nursing CEUs for time engaged in training and professional development activities. First established by a volunteer task force in 1970, each nursing CEU…

- Provides nurses with educational and training opportunities of a short duration that are not part of an academic degree program.

"Hopefully the main reason that nurses pursue continuing education is to keep themselves well informed and to keep their nursing skills up to date," says Barbara Feild, a senior accreditation specialist with the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association.
But there are practical considerations, as well. Feild points out that nursing CEUs are also used to satisfy some states' licensing renewal and re-certification requirements. Some states have mandatory yearly continuing education requirements, while others do not.
Nursing CEUs can be earned in several ways, including: attending conferences, workshops, and seminars; completing a certificate program; or finishing an online learning module.
Here's how nursing CEUs break down:
- One CEU equals ten contact hours of "participation in organized continuing education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and instruction."
- As its name suggests, a contact hour refers to one hour of instruction or independent study.
- Although many confuse the two, CEUs and contact hours are not one and the same. For example, if someone says they need 30 CEUs, they probably mean 30 contact hours. (Thirty CEUs would equal 300 hours of instruction.)
- In addition, a nursing CEU should not be confused with college credit, which typically requires more rigorous study, class time, and testing.
- Nursing CEUs are offered through approved providers and learning institutions.
Nursing CEU requirements vary depending on where you live. The CEUs necessary for re-certification, for instance, differ from region to region. Also, not all jurisdictions accept online or distance-learning continuing education courses. Check with your state or territorial board of nursing for more specific information about requirements.
